Trepidation

Janko Petrek

nasosky trpnutieIn the square of an ancient town someone has written on the wall at night:

people are pillars

 of salt

The graffiti was painted in giant white letters so it could be seen even from far away. Early in the morning at dawn, the graffiti was noticed by the first residents going to work. Not understanding it they were shaking their heads and hurried to herald the news to others. The news spread quickly throughout the town. By noon everyone knew it.

Many could not believe it and ran into the square to see the strange graffiti for themselves. By the evening the entire square was crowded to the fullest by people, who were curiously stretching their necks and looking in amazement at the incredibly giant letters. People turned stiff out of surprise. They were standing there and looking ahead like pillars of salt.
